In response to Alex's fourth comment
(Spoilers for the rest of the book)
I know! I feel that the writer did a really good job on this book. It is told from such a different perspective that it sticks out and makes you remember it more. I was definitely nervous when Lily “didn’t pay attention to the knock. Later I would remember it didn’t sound like an ordinary knock. More like a fist pounding” (289).
I guess I’ll start with what I thought it did well. In the ending, when Lily finally is accepted by the Daughters (and Son), I think it was a very well portrayed and powerful moment, when everything is at odds, they still have their sister’s back. Even though she’s white.
However, I don’t think that T Ray just turning around was in character of him at all. He gives up. Why would he do this? He’s so abusive, that you would think that nothing could stand in the way of him and his prize. It seems totally out of character for him to just slink off at the end and say, ‘oh well, guess you beat me’. Also, I don’t think they give quite enough at the end about Zach and this new Becca character. I get that it would kind of take away from the core of the story, but I think she could have squeezed it into an epilogue.
On that topic though, I think that Lily has definitely grown in the same way, finally having the courage to stand up and say that she doesn’t like the way she is being treated and that she deserves better.
I think August shaped her the most as she is the most motherly figure to Lily, and shows her unconditional love. The black Mary also seems to affect her, showing her the courage within, and not something she needs to pray to outwardly. Through both of these, Lily is able to find herself, and become her own person, not just an emotionless slave to T Ray or anyone else.
I think at the end, all of the colored folk she meets protect her and help her heal from her past and trauma. I think it is a very well worded book, and I’m very glad that we got to read it!
Alex and Aaliyah, it's always good to see someone enjoy a book! It's clear that your enjoyment and your analysis of this book are supporting one another--good job both picking out powerful moments and working to point to MOWAW's wherever they turn up. Thanks for quotes and questions. Grade on Portals.
